Share useful information, not only a diagnosis
A short child profile can help the teacher understand communication, interests, sensory needs, safety concerns, effective supports, and early signs of overwhelm.
Keep it practical. “Uses short phrases but may not answer open-ended questions when stressed” is more useful than a page of general labels.
Create familiarity when possible
Photographs of the teacher, classroom, entrance, desk area, or bus can make the first day less abstract. A brief visit may help if the school offers one.
Do not expect a preview to eliminate difficulty. Its purpose is to give the child a few recognizable details inside a much larger change.
Identify the communication path
Decide how the child will ask for help, a break, the bathroom, clarification, or more time. Make sure the system is available across the school day, not stored in a backpack when it is needed.
Parents should also know how information will move between home and school. A communication system should share what matters without requiring either side to document every minute.
Expect learning about each other
The teacher is learning the child, and the child is learning the teacher. Early misunderstandings may happen around language, pacing, humor, prompting, and signs of distress.
Look for patterns and share observations without turning every hard day into proof that the placement cannot work. At the same time, repeated safety or dignity concerns should be addressed promptly.
Coordinate without crowding the child
When families consent, school and clinical teams can share strategies, priorities, and observations. The purpose is consistency where it helps, not making every environment identical.
Children may respond differently at school and home because the expectations and motivation are different. Those differences are information, not evidence that one adult is wrong.
