Choose training that meets the current standard

Confirm that you meet the BACB eligibility requirements, including age, education, and required background checks. Choose a 40-hour training provider whose completion certificate explicitly meets the 2026 RBT training requirements. The BACB does not provide or endorse a particular course. Training must span at least five days and be completed within 180 days.

  • Ask who teaches the course, whether it covers the current task list and ethics, and whether you can practice skills and ask questions.
  • Keep the completion certificate and confirm your assessor and responsible certificant arrangements before scheduling the initial competency assessment.

Assessment, application, examination

Complete the initial competency assessment after training and within 90 days before applying. Submit the required documentation and attestations through your BACB account. When the BACB approves the application, schedule the examination according to its instructions. Certification alone is not permission to practice independently: RBT work requires close, ongoing supervision.

Keep the credential current

Track the renewal date and current supervision, ethics, and professional development obligations in your BACB account. RBTs newly certified or recertified in 2026 move to a two-year cycle with 12 professional development units; transition timing is individual, so follow your portal and the current handbook.
