Before you arrive
Read the supervisor-approved plan, safety guidance, communication supports, and data definitions. Ask how the family prefers to coordinate arrival, transitions, and materials. Bring the needed supplies, but let the learner’s interests and routines guide the interaction.
During the session
Introduce yourself warmly, notice what the learner enjoys, offer meaningful choices, and follow the clinical plan. Look for natural opportunities to practice a useful skill. Honor communication in all its forms, including AAC, and respond to assent or signs of discomfort with your supervisor’s guidance. Record observable data rather than impressions.
- Ask before moving materials or changing a household routine.
- Keep directions concise, allow processing time, and reinforce relevant effort or communication according to the plan.
- If safety or a plan question arises, contact your supervisor rather than improvising a new procedure.
Afterward
Share a brief, respectful factual update with the caregiver within your role. Document promptly and bring questions, successes, and concerns to supervision.
