Separate certification, licensure, and payer enrollment
After BACB certification, confirm the rules in every state where you will practice. State licensure may be required; New Jersey has its own behavior analyst licensing board. A BCBA credential does not by itself complete state or payer requirements. An employer may coordinate steps, but ask who owns each application and when you may begin each type of service.
- Confirm state license status and scope with the relevant board.
- Apply for or verify your individual NPI in NPPES, as applicable; keep contact and taxonomy information accurate.
- Ask the agency which payer panels require enrollment or credentialing, whether CAQH is used, who submits and attests to your profile, and how status is tracked.
- Keep a secure record of license, BACB status, liability coverage, education, work history, NPI, and renewal dates.
Interview the agency, too
Ask how caseload size, travel, supervision, documentation time, caregiver collaboration, and crisis support work in practice. Request a realistic example of a treatment decision when a family’s priorities and a preset program did not align. Ask what training and mentorship look like in the first 90 days and how clinical concerns are escalated.
- How much protected time is available for assessment, plan writing, data review, and caregiver work?
- Who supports me with complex cases, ethics questions, or a disagreement about medical necessity?
- How are technician supervision, family availability, cancellations, and travel accounted for in expectations and compensation?
- What outcomes matter beyond hours delivered, and how are learner assent and meaningful goals considered?
Choose a place that supports your practice
Name the kind of clinician you want to become: perhaps family-centered in-home care, mentorship, interdisciplinary collaboration, or a particular age group. Compare that vision with actual schedules, clinical policies, turnover, and the voices of current staff. A polished interview matters less than transparent answers and structures that make ethical care possible.

Requirements and clinical guidance evolve. Verify the current rules and adapt any suggestions to the learner’s individualized plan and supervisor direction.
