The distinction

Restricted activities generally involve implementing therapeutic procedures directly with a client. Unrestricted activities develop the work a BCBA performs: assessment, data analysis, treatment design, supervision and training, and clinically relevant documentation. The same setting can contain both; classify the actual task, not the job title or location.

  • Restricted example: delivering a teaching program with a client.
  • Unrestricted example: analyzing that client’s data and proposing a program change with supervisor guidance.
  • Not fieldwork: billing, routine scheduling, unrelated clerical tasks, or studying for the certification exam.

Watch the cumulative balance

Under both the current and 2027 BCBA fieldwork frameworks, at least 60% of total hours must be unrestricted, so restricted hours can make up no more than 40%. Discuss borderline activities with your qualified supervisor before logging them; keep notes that make the clinical purpose clear. The BACB requirements and verification forms govern what qualifies.
